Resin Sand Castings:
In resin sand casting the mould differs from the one employed in
green sand casting for the different components used and because
these are mixed not long before molding.
In resin sand casting phenolic or ureic-furan resins are
employed. These are mixed with the sand and then activated by a
chemical catalyst that causes an exothermic reaction of variable
duration, according to the quantities used, this makes the sand
harden, maintaining the shape left by the pattern.
This operation is carried employing a resin-sand preparation
plant; the resin-sand is poured into the flask containing the
pattern by means of a mixer arm.
The same operation is carried out for obtaining the other half
of the mould, which is then mated to the first one. Once the
reaction is completed the pattern is removed and the cope and
drag, the two flasks that form the resin sand casting mould, are
mated. The complete mould is then transferred for casting by
means of a bridge crane or a fork lift truck, considering that
the resin sand molding technique is ideal for casting very large
pieces or for manufacturing thermoforming moulds.
