Materials of Brake Rotor:
Brakes are very important in the operation of any vehicle. A
brake rotor is the large metal disc located behind the wheels of
a vehicle. When the brake pedal is pressed down, a caliper
presses the brake pads against the rotor. This friction is what
causes the wheel to slow and the vehicle to come to a stop. This
friction also creates heat that must escape from the braking
system to maintain effective stopping power.
Brake rotors can be made from many different materials. Each
material has its own effect on the performance of the rotor.
Some brake rotors use different design methods, such as piercing
the rotor in different patterns, for high-performance upgrades
to vehicle braking systems. The ideal brake rotor is usable in
any weather, no matter if it is rainy or sunny. It also has the
capability to easily and quickly dissipate heat from the
friction of the pads rubbing against its surface.
Brake Rotor Construction
The construction of a brake rotor plays a large part in how it
performs. Different brake rotors use combinations of different
materials and designs to modify their achievements, and their
prices.
Materials
There are six different main types of materials used to make
brake rotors. Each type has its own nuances, making it ideal for
different applications.
Cast Iron
Cast iron is the material a standard brake rotor is made from.
Many are made from a solid piece of metal. If used in
high-performance situations, the part of the rotor that makes
contact with the brake pads may heat too much and expand the
entire rotor, which causes cracking and brake failure. An
upgrade to this type of rotor is available which uses a cast
iron outer ring and aluminum inner area, which allows for free
expansion.
Steel
Steel rotors are made from a thin sheet of metal and are very
lightweight. They have a high capacity for handling heat, but do
not last long. They are commonly used on drag racing vehicles
for reducing weight.
Layered Steel
Primarily used for racing, this type of rotor is made of several
sheets of steel laminated together. Much of the warping that can
be experienced with hard use can be eliminated by using layered
steel over solid steel.
Aluminum
Brake rotors made from aluminum are lightweight but not very
durable. They are able to dissipate heat quickly and easily,
though they cannot absorb heat well. They are most commonly used
in motorcycle braking systems.
High Carbon
This type of rotor mixes carbon and iron, which provides an
increased ability to absorb and dissipate heat. Other metals,
such as silicon, are often added as well to reduce vibration and
noise on braking. High carbon rotors can withstand a large
amount of stress without failing, making them perfect for use in
high performance vehicles.
Composite Ceramic
Ceramic can absorb and dissipate heat easily, which makes it a
great choice for brake rotors. The material is also very
lightweight. The friction of the brake is hardly affected with
the increase of heat, making these rotors the best choice for
high-performance vehicles.
